This is called the "Daily 5". Every day our children must participate in five activities. The children are guided to set the expectations to follow within each activity. The beauty of this programme is that it allows children ownership of how and what they choose to do and in what order they choose to do it. It is a fantastic programme that allows everyone quality time to read and also to work with their teacher. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">From a teacher's point of view, children stay on task longer, are more focused, are a resource for each other in class, monitor themselves and others. All of this frees the teacher from managing, and allows them to devote their time to teaching. This has brought about a noticeable improvement in progress and focus compared to more traditional methods used in many traditional New Zealand schools.

We believe providing opportunity for independence and self managing is laying the groundwork for our learners to be capable of addressing those challenges that lie ahead of us all.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">I believe some of my challenges are strongly influenced by my own schooling experience and upbringing. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">When I was young, Te Reo Maori was addressed in a tokenistic way at school, and only in the form of providing kapa haka opportunities and covering basic greetings in class from time to time. We had one Maori teacher in our school, and he managed behaviour, so therefore he seemed terrifying to me as a young child.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">Maori was presented to us as fun - kapa haka and simple greetings. Yet, the corporal punishment discipline delivered by the only Maori role model in our school was anything but fun. This was a conflicting and confusing message. There was no challenge in terms of what we could learn about our identity, our culture and our values. There was huge challenge in connecting to this scary representative of our culture and learning. As a result, I grew up a white Maori in Christchurch. I saw myself as white, I measured myself against white children and my culture was bypassed.
I want to ensure the indigenous knowledge of our children is recognised, celebrated and extended. I want to ensure my school demonstrated culturally responsive pedagogy.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">A natural response in this situation would be to go to a community kaumatua and seek their support and advice. What works for one or pleases one but will often displease the others.
Pornography is a contentious issue, as it can be subjective. One person's "mild titillation" can be another person's "objectionable filth". As a principal called to at times adjudicate such differing opinions, there is always the potential danger of making a mountain from a mole hill.
What pastoral support is in place for students witnessing the content?

Our school has decided to provide devices for our students to use. This way we are able to manage and assign one device per student and monitor the use and safety of these. Hapara Teacher Dashboard provides our teachers with an ability to assign projects, to access student work, and to monitor and share student work.
Our school vision plays an important part and influences our wider school management, learning and behaviours. With this in mind, the approach and expectation is similar across the school.
This way our children and parents have a shared expectation, responsibility and understanding of the rules and consequences.
Our parents still believe that what worked for them will work for their children. However the research strongly tells us that with the exponential growth in population, demands on resources and time, and the pervasive spread of technology into every aspect of our lives (the Internet of Things), our children need to be developing divergent thinking skills in order to prepare for this unknown, exponentially changing future.
We need to ensure our future citizens embrace their local environment and learn to be self sufficient and appreciative.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Maori Community: <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;">The nature of this community revolves around the necessity and ability<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px;"> to acknowledge and implement Te Ao Maori into our school curriculum.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Unfortunately this partnership has presented as mostly a one sided 'dictatorship model', where the Maori Community is standing back and waiting to cast judgement on whatever happens, rather that collaborating and creating alongside staff around our school vision of 'Together We Care Learn and Grow.'
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">As stated by Crowell 1995, "knowledge is perceived within experience and cannot be separated from the personal meaning given to the individual."
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">From this, I extrapolate that I cannot expect our Maori community to change who they are as Maori and as Iwi from this area. I can hope that knowledge passed down from Kaumatua and Kuia could be understood and internalised. Knowledge of the whakatauki that states the most important thing in the world is people, and that we as their community, and as the educators of their tamariki and mokopuna, are not just people but their people.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">We have held hui to consult with our community and share the impressive learning achievements of our children. The message from the community at these hui has been, "don't ask us what we would like you to do. Tell us what you are going to do and we will tell you what is wrong with it."
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Such an approach makes collaborative community building challenging indeed.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">However, we must demonstrate the Key Competencies and Habits of Mind we encourage in our children, and persevere in the face of challenge. We have to for our children's sake.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Te Ao Maori is an important part of who we are as a nation and having the ability to teach and learn is a privilege. The Te Reo Maori we teach needs to be supported by the experts within our local community if the school is meet the goals and ambitions of the community for it's students.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">As research says, "the critical element is that regardless of whether it involves skills, concepts, content, points of view, or methods, interdisciplinary always involves bringing together two or more things under one roof. And this is done in a conscious manner, for example through team teaching (Ballard & Anderson, 1994), by coordinating the contents of separate courses (Palmer, 1991), by teaching two subjects together (McBride & Silverman, 1991), or by exploring a general theme through various discipline-based activities (McDonald & Czerniak, 1994). Still, the content, methods, processes or skills taught remain bound to the primary discipline from which they come." An understanding of collaboration is needed between the two communities to better meet the needs and desires of our community.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Our desire for collaboration has not been reciprocated up until now. Therefore we have sought new ways to build bridges for that collaboration to happen. This has included going out into the community. Visiting our community in their 'place' - Marae, local markets and touch football tournaments. Increasing our on-line presence and sourcing a school pepeha that was gifted to us, then hand painting this onto six huge murals and displaying these on our building exterior.
are most relevant to you.

<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What are the current issues in your community? How would
you or your community of practice address them?

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Our community of practice is becoming smaller each year. We are a small rural school that was originally built to teach the children of the local Woodhill Forest workers in the early 19th century. Late 2014 the local iwi, Ngati Whatua, won their Treaty Claim and the local forest and surrounding land (not in private ownership) was given back to the local iwi Trust. The Local Council also has a greenbelt in our immediate area which surrounds our school limiting any prospective housing development. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Therefore our school has a limited community, which in turn affects our school role.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Initially a few of our families had questions accepting the size of our school with the hope we will grow. Unfortunately we can have no immediate growth without housing development.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What is the purpose and function of your practice? In what
ways do you cater for the community of your practice?

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Our teaching and learning programmes, practices, vision and implementation embrace our rural lifestyle and opportunities. Innovative and passionate staff, along with the assistance of technology is one way to boost student achievement. Higher student achievement is the best way to market our school in our community and grow our school role. This is our goal, and the desire of our parent community. Our staff work hard collaboratively to continue to grow our student achievement.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">What are the core values that underpin your profession?
Evaluate your practice with regard to these values.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The key competencies strongly influence our community of practice, in particular our teaching and learning programmes - why, how, and what we teach.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I strongly believe that key competencies are life long skills that are important to teach, learn and practice in order to prepare our children with the ability to persevere, problem solve, be creative and survive in the fast paced unknown of the future which is, the 21st century.

Our teachers are open to continuous learning through Post Grad study - in 2016 all staff will complete their own independent tertiary study. We hope this will compliment school operations and the future direction of our school.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Challenge: To move our parent community with us through modelling expectations and 21st learning programmes with our children, who will in turn involve their parents.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Step 2 - <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; line-height: 24px;">REALITY What do I need?
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I am a strong believer that the key competencies will support our children into the future and we base all our teaching and learning programmes on key competencies. The research through the Mind Lab strongly suggests that our curriculum must be key competency focused rather than knowledge delivery based. Creativity, problem solving, flexibility and perseverance are the dispositions that alongside the key competencies will see our children be successful in life and in life long learning.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Step 3 - <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; line-height: 24px;">NEXT-STEP Learning
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">My focus in this post grad study is to move from a traditional teaching and learning response and set up and move into a modern 21st century teaching and learning response and mindset.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">The research and information provided through the Mind Lab has provided me with the research and evidence to support these changes and the pedagogical basis that underpins them. I need to continue to inform our 'traditional education focused' parent community about what we and doing, and in particular the why we are doing it.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "open_sansregular" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">As our country school has decreased in number, I will be a teaching principal this year. We have one multi-levelled classroom and will be team teaching across the levels. This provides me with an opportunity to model the expectations and build a new culture for our school. An environment and learning program that is Whanau-Based alongside the principles of Maori and whanau.

<span class="s1" style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Our <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">next step is to use this more regularly and independently to improve what and why we do what we do.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Teachers are always reflecting, formally through staff appraisals but also everyday in many ways. Through conversations with colleagues, learning conversations with children and introspectively.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As outlined in the reading, Quinn (1988/2000) identified that some reflections can be time consuming. In order to address this after each lesson our teachers bring children in together to reflect on how well they achieved and what they think they need to do next. This can be short and simple, through an indication with your thumb - thumbs up, thumbs mid way and thumbs down. This quickly informs the teacher how well it went, or what needs more work and with whom. This simple system works well with junior children.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Rees (2007) identified the need for solitary reflection in private. Goal setting conferences and goal setting charts that align with our school values - together we Care Learn and Grow - provide an opportunity for children to self reflect but also within a context that we all believe in.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We all need to be aware, as educators, mentors and, supervisors, of the risks, and proceed with sensitivity (Morley 2007). We also need to work within carefully established boundaries if learners are to address difficult personal, (Hunt, 2001) academic and behavioural issues.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Educators may themselves be at risk – not least because they may feel tempted to go beyond their own level of expertise. As Boud and Walker (1998) point out, teachers need to “be aware of what they can and cannot handle”.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What is clear throughout this reading is that there are many types of reflective practices and many thoughts on the processes of reflection. As mentioned earlier, our aim is to grow a community of learners where Together We Care Learn Grow by encouraging children to reflect and develop positive behaviours for learning. We achieve this by proactively promoting and focusing on the positive, and modelling the desired outcome, in what we say and how we behave.

I have been blogging since 2011, and this assignment caused me to pause, take stock and reflect on the process, but more importantly, the philosophy behind and around it.
We encourage children to be selective about the personal information they share publicly, and I apply the same standard to myself.
